Post# 197 - California Earthquake Chips - The Non-PC Salty Fried Snack

Subject: Earthquake Chips
Date: Wed, 23 Mar 2011 19:55:54 -0400

Dear California Chips,

According to earthquake.usgs.gov, last year, over 222,000 people died as the result of an earthquake.  In 2008, almost 88,000 perished in an earthquake in China.  In 2005, about 86,000 died in an earthquake in Pakistan.  In 2004, almost 228,000 died due to an earthquake in Sumatra.  We’re still tallying the damages from the disaster in Japan.

Why do companies like to name food items after natural disasters?  If I buy your California Earthquake chips, am I going to suddenly know what it’s like to lose my family, home, employer, car, and dog in one fell swoop?

I’m normally against making everything politically correct.  Doesn’t it seem a little insensitive though?  I live in Michigan.  We prefer positive names like “Better Made Rainbow Chips.”

If you’re truly sensitive about the losses that people have experienced over in Japan, why not put your money where your mouth is.  Donate all proceeds from your Earthquake brand.

Earthquake just sounds a little heavy for a delightful snack.  Just a thought.

Sincerely,

Jerry

Dear California Chips,

I sent you two notes--one on March 23rd, and one on April 17.  Neither received a response.  I suspect that neither was read.  Had you read them, you'd see that I asked a legitimate question--one that deserves attention, and one that warrants a response.

Why bother having a "Contact Us" section on your website when you don't bother reading your email? Did you forget about your customers?  I bet you didn't forget to make sure you got paid for all the chips.

It just seems a little fishy.  Besides the offensive name, why would I buy chips from you?  What if you forgot to inspect them?  What if one of the workers forgot to cover their mouth when they sneezed, and the sneeze landed right in my bag?

I'm very disappointed.  Very disappointed indeed.

Sincerely,

Jerry

Jerry

I did receive your prior emails. Quite frankly I did and still do not have a response other than to say  I am sorry you do not care for our brand/flavor name.

Sincerely

Kevin

  1. What crappy customer service from Kevin @ California Chips!

His apathetic reply (with the emphasis on pathetic), reminds me of three "Demotivator" posters from Despair, Inc.
